Halifax shuts out Wayne Christian in softball

The Halifax Academy Lady Vikings were in the winning mood Friday afternoon at home against Wayne Christian.

At the plate for Halifax , Candice Smith had a single, a double and a triple along with two RBI's, Ashlynn Liles had a single and a double along with one RBI, Ashton Garner had a double, Morgan Hudomint had a single and Emerson Poole had a single with one RBI.

 

On the mound for the Vikings, Sydney Smith started on the mound pitching two and 2/3 innings with four strikeouts, Candice Smith pitched four and 1/3 innings with five strikeouts.

Jackets Varsity baseball earn win at home Friday
The Roanoke Rapids High School Varsity Baseball team picked up a big conference win over Northern Vance by a score of 6-4 Friday night at Doyle Field.
 
Cameron Medlin started the game and picked up the win for the Yellow Jackets.  Bennett Liverman relieved Medlin and picked up the save.
 
Aaron Jackson, Cameron Medlin (2 RBI), Peyton Jackson (1 RBI), Ethan Vincent (1 RBI), and Bennett Liverman (2 RBI) each collected hits for RRHS.
 
Coach Mark Snead stated, "This was a real team win for us tonight.  We had great pitching from Cameron and Bennett.  We weren't perfect in the field, but our defense stepped up when they needed to and kept them from having any big innings.  We got guys on base and got some timely hits when we needed them.  I am proud of the guys tonight."
 
With the win the Yellow Jackets improve to 5-3 overall on the season and 4-1 in the Northern Carolina Conference.  The next game for RRHS is a conference game scheduled for Monday at J.F. Webb.  Game time is set for 6pm.

KIPP baseball beats Weldon

The KIPP Pride Varsity baseball team beat Weldon Thursday 28-4.

Spencer Simonowich earned the victory on the mound for KIPP.

While at the Plate for KIPP. Yobani Marin went 5-5 with three singles;  Jarvis Adams also went 5-5 with two doubles and two singles;  Spencer Simonowich was third for KIPP going 5-5 with three singles and a double.

John A. St. Sing

John A. St. Sing, 74, of Emporia, VA, died Thursday, April 5, 2018. He was born in Halifax County ,NC, son of the late Thomas J. and Katie Carter St. Sing.

Mr. St. Sing retired as Sergeant with the Emporia Police Department with more than 33 years of service. He loved his family and community.

Preceding John in death were his wives, Carolyn Taylor St. Sing and Doris Willis St. Sing.

Surviving are his son, David St. Sing (Pheobee); step daughter, Kaye Jackson; grandchildren, David N. St. Sing, Dustan Jarratt (Emily), Sarah Jackson (Daniel),Lynsey Overstreet (Keith); six great grandchildren, among them, Hudson Jarratt, Reed and Audrey Overstreet.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Monday, April 9,2018, at Echols Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Greensville Memorial Cemetery.The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home Monday from 11:00 am until 1:00pm

Lady Jackets sting Eagles in extra innings

The Roanoke Rapids High School Lady Yellow Jackets softball team hosted a conference match-up against Warren County Eagles.

The game went to 9 innings to determine the winner, with Roanoke Rapids scoring in the bottom of the ninth to win the game 3-2.

It was a scoreless game until the bottom of the 6th inning that put the Lady Yellow Jackets up 2-0.

The Lady Eagles came back in the top of the 7th and tied it up 2-2.

The Lady Yellow Jackets scored the walk off run with a stolen base in the bottom of the 9th for the win.

At the plate for the Lady Jackets:  Makayla Pair was 2-4 with 2 singles, Abbi Carpenter had a single, Kaitlin Rogerson was 4-4 with 4 singles, Cassidy Dickens had a single, Meagan Colston had a single and a sacrifice hit with an RBI, Riley Landen was 3-4 with 2 singles and a double and had a stolen base to win the game.

Cassidy Dickens pitched 6 innings with 2Ks, and 7 hits with 2 runs. Lily Curtis pitched 3 innings with 4Ks, BB, with 2 hits.

Lewis D. Allen, 87, of Emporia, passed away Sunday, August 19, 2018. March 13, 1931 - August 19, 2018.

Mr. Allen was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Vincent Allen; his son, Larry Allen; daughter, Wanda Lankford and brother, Benton Allen.

Mr. Allen is survived by four sons, J. W. Allen and wife, Patricia, Randy Allen, Stanley Allen and wife, Cindy, and Barry Allen; seven grandchildren, Ashley Burns and husband, Adam, Jessica Hevener and husband, Michael, Kathleen Crowder and husband, Dwayne, Ryan Allen, Brianna Allen, David Allen and Lee Hunter; five great-grandchildren and a half-brother, James Allen and wife, Pam.

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Friday, August 24 at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd, Jarratt, Virginia.

The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, August 25 at Calvary Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Greensville Memorial Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 310 N. Main St., Emporia, Virginia 23847.

Shirley Pearson

surrounded by family and friends, died September 17, 2018 at Beason Place in Greensboro, N.C.

Shirley was born in 1932 in Emporia, Va. She lived there all of her life except the last three years when she moved to Greensboro to be near her daughter.

Shirley graduated from Greensville County High School. Much of her adult life, over 30 years, she and her husband owned and operated a family style restaurant.

Shirley is survived by her daughter, Bonnie Pearson of Greensboro. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gertrude and Billy Bowen, brother William and her husband T.J. Pearson. Shirley loved to play bingo and acquired the nickname of BINGO by her fellow residents at Heritage Greens Assisted Living.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, September 21, 2018 at Echols Funeral Home Chapel and followed by interment at Greensville Memorial Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00 A. M. until time of the service. Online condolences may be left at echolsfuneralhome.com.

Friday night's free benefit concert for local Roanoke Rapids Battalion Chief Fireman Kevin Hawkins who is fighting Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma cancer was the very first concert under new ownership of the Roanoke Rapids Theatre.

North Carolina Native recording artist Kasey Tyndall sang to several hundred people Friday night with Dueling Pianos performing in the lobby prior to the concert.

Elma Ernestine “Tina” Griffin

Wakefield VA - died peacefully on September 27, 2018.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. C.W. “Jack” Griffin Sr.; her parents, Elmer E. Ross and Hattie Borrell Ross; two sisters, Irma Molloy, Margie Hicks, and a brother, J.D. Ross.  She is survived by her brother, Wallace Edwards; two sons, Clarence Wayne Griffin, Jr. and his wife, Susan Reagan Griffin, and Ross Laine Griffin and his wife, Heather Hill Griffin; four grandchildren, Reagan Griffin, Whitney Griffin, Alexis Watkins and Allie Watkins.

Tina was born 12,22,1937 in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina and graduated from Roanoke Rapids high school.  After graduating, she moved to Richmond, Virginia where she attended Virginia Commonwealth University.  Tina then began employment with the state of Virginia under the Department of Agriculture, finishing her career as an assistant to the State Veterinarian of Virginia.  There she met Dr. C.W. “Jack” Griffin, and moved to Wakefield, Virginia.  She was a faithful member of the Wakefield United Methodist Church, the Women’s Club, and the Daughters of the Confederacy.  Most of all she was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and a person that believed family came first.  She will be greatly missed by her family, who loved her very much.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, Monday, October 1, 2018 at Wakefield United Methodist Church with Pastor Glenn Riggs officiating. Burial will follow at Wakefield Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the burial in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wakefield UMC, P.O. Box 87 Wakefield, VA 23888. R.W.
