Community comes together for Derrin

The Roanoke Rapids community came together Wednesday making the Derrin Mallory Hot Dog fundraiser a SELL OUT in less than an hour and half into it.

The Roanoke Rapids resident and RRHS sophomore Derrin Mallory has the Roanoke Valley coming to him and his family's support. #We Believe - Prayers for Derrin campaign is drawing so much support in prayers and money and showing the Roanoke Valley can and will come together.

Mallory the son of Chaloner Middle School Assistant Principal Angela Edwards Mallory was recently diagnosed with leukemia and is under going immediate treatment. Even today when friend Jackie Robinson organized the Hot Dog fundraiser, Derrin was headed back to Greenville for two appointments.

Hot Dog sale fundraiser organizer Robinson stated she was so humble this morning when she drove up to the ProBuild parking lot to get started. 'There were so many helpers, friends, teachers from both Chaloner and Roanoke Rapids High school, students from Chaloner and Roanoke Rapids high school and Derrin's Yellow Jackets football teammates and coaches were there ready to help." Robinson said.

Robinson stated, "we planned for 500 bags and I worried that might be too many, well after a hour and half we had sold out of 550 bags and people were still coming up. It says so much about our community and support Derrin has behind him in his fight."

Robinson wanted to THANK EVERYONE who bought, took part in or just helped and donated. The funds raised will got straight to  the Mallory family to help with his treatment travels.

The Halifax Touch A Truck warmed the hearts of kids young and old Saturday in the Roanoke Rapids Theatre parking lot.

Not to mention the event filled the back of Halifax County Sheriff's Yukon up for the food pantry at the sheriff’s office for the needy. While the event was free, organizers Ross McKinney and Sheriff Tripp asked attendees to bring a non-perishable food item to help stock the food pantry at the sheriff’s office.

According to Redwine's Towing, they gave out over 300 gifts to kids who stopped by to see their very big wrecker and Citizens on Patrol and the Roanoke Rapids Police booth over 90 Kids fingerprint I.D.'s were done. A member of the Roanoke River Antique Engine and Tractor club mad trips around the parking lot all day carrying kids in painted barrel trailers.

Air horns, sirens, horns filled the air as the kids pulled the straps or pushed the button. A complete list was not available at this time, but a few that standout were the Halifax County Sheriff Department, Northampton County Sheriff Department, Roanoke Rapids Police Department, Enfield Police Department, Weldon Police Department, North Carolina Highway Patrol, North Carolina Forestry Department, North Carolina Wildlife, MJ Price Construction,  Roanoke River Antique Engine and Tractor Club, North Carolina Department of Transportation, Roanoke Rapids Fire Department, Weldon Fire Department, Scotland Neck Fire Department, Davie Fire Department, Redwine's Garage, PETA, Coca-Cola, Halifax Community College EMS Mobile Lab, Roanoke Valley Rescue Squad, C.D. Martin injured in pre-season game

Former Roanoke Rapids Yellow Jacket and Roanoke Rapids native Kareem Martin was injured Thursday night in the Arizona Cardinals pre-season game against Denver Broncos.

Darren Urban posted in the Arizona Cardinals website Blog: Special teams will be impacted with the short-term loss of linebacker Kareem Martin. Martin hurt his MCL and Arians said they are hoping he’s only out two or three weeks. You have to wonder, if fellow linebacker Tristan Okpalaugo hadn’t gotten hurt earlier (it was announced as a right knee; Arians said after it was a hamstring) and was still playing if Martin even would have been on the field. Bad luck all around

Dylan Moore Days is not only about celebrating the life of a special little boy that the community adopted as the "Roanoke Valley Cowboy"; it is also about "paying it forward".

The Moore family received an overwhelming amount of support during Dylan's illness and has made Dylan Moore Days an annual event benefit to help other families going through a medical crisis.

Dylan Days 2016 beneficiaries are Harrison West, Angie Benthall, and Tommy Garner. Harrison is battling Ewing Sarcoma.  Angie was hospitalized for several months after developing an infection while delivering her son.  She has several months of rehab before she will be able to return to work.  Tommy has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma and received a stem cell transplant at UNC in June.

Sunday was filled with a full day of activities starting with breakfast then cowboy church service, the horse show, Barbeque lunch, Dylan trivia contest, balloon release, birthday cake, Corn hole tournament and Chinese auction drawings.

Happy Birthday and balloon release can be seen at: https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fteck21567%2Fvideos%2F10207697133249903%2F&show_text=0&width=560
